Taking the GMC Hummer EV SUV on a Desert Road Trip
The GMC Hummer EV SUV continues to surprise people for many reasons. Most people expect it to be some sort of massive brute like the original Hummer H1, but instead find a fast charging, luxurious, and useful SUV that not only tackles obstacles, but also brings genuine pleasure with its sports car-like performance.
A Vehicle to Help Others in Need
After the most recent devastating California wildfires, Gabriel Vega, a writer for duPont Registry, found himself and his family being forced to evacuate frantically in the middle of the night without any real knowledge of what would happen to their home. Luckily, their home was spared, but the sadness and despair of it all was overwhelming. Gabriel and his wife used the Hummer EV to pack supplies to gift directly to those in need, as the local shelters were overrun with more than they could handle. They brought things to local businesses and special campaigns to assist those in need.
Trim Levels, Power, and Capacities
The 2025 Hummer EV SUV is available in two trim levels: EV2x dual-motor with 570 horsepower and the EV3x tri-motor that makes an earth-spinning 1,000 horsepower. Those who decide to get the dual-motor model will be able to tow up to 12,000 pounds. Behind the rear seats owners will find 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space that increases to a maximum of 81.8 cubic feet when the seats are folded.
Driving Range
Owners will have plenty of driving range no matter which model they choose, as the EV3x will be able to drive 381 miles when they option a 24-module battery pack, while 2x models will travel up to 311 miles on a single charge. When stopped at a Level 3 DC fast charger, the Hummer can add 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes, bringing EVs closer and closer to the quick top-ups of gas-powered vehicles.
A Trip to Joshua Tree National Park
After a couple of days of using the Hummer to give back to the community, Gabriel sees that the weather situation has changed enough to be able to make a quick trip out into the dessert with the Hummer EV SUV, a trip he had planned to make before the deadly wildfires. His trip took him from Pasadena to Joshua Tree National Park and then back home.
The Hummer EV has No Equal
As Gabriel starts his journey, he notices he has a highway on-ramp all to himself, which affords him the opportunity to do what EVs do so well: a 0-60 mph run. “A sharp right-hander lines me up with a highway on-ramp as I approach Interstate 210 heading east. As one does when presented with a runway and clearance for take-off, I gun it. I’ve experienced world-beating acceleration from the Lucid Air Sapphire, the Pininfarina Battista, and the Lamborghini Revuelto. Still, none is quite as dramatic as the GMC Hummer EV SUV. It squats violently. This electric colossus picks up speed in a way something of its size shouldn’t be able to, even without the full-power Watts To Freedom mode engaged.”
There’s Nothing in this World Like Super Cruise
The highlight of the journalist’s trip is Super Cruise, though. With the ability to let the system drive for you, being able to take your hands off the wheel is a pleasure when driving down the highway. Super Cruise has more than 750,000 miles of mapped roads between the United States and Canada and is the best hands-free system on the market, with duPont Registry saying, “It’s the type of system that is so easy to use and effective that living without it again is something I don’t look forward to.”
A Much-Needed Trip Away from LA
Gabriel and his wife make it to Joshua Tree without a hiccup and drive the Hummer for four hours on the various trails, just enjoying the day after a long and difficult week in Los Angeles. His wife even wanted to drive more and more, something the writer said she never asks to do when he gets loaners from super car manufacturers like McLaren, Ferrari, or Lamborghini.
What Makes the Hummer EV SUV so Incredible
“Yet, that’s what makes the GMC Hummer EV SUV such a compelling truck. It isn’t just fast, spacious, and comfortable. It’s easy to drive. Despite its footprint, thanks to over a dozen cameras, maneuvering it is no challenge, making it approachable to anyone. The SUV takes things further because its wheelbase is nearly nine inches shorter than the truck’s. Combined with an aggressive rear-axle steering system, it has the turning radius of a small sedan.”
