Pull Your World With The New 2024 Sierra Heavy Duty’s Enhanced Trailering

GMC was founded in 1911 by brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky. They created GMC as a purely medium and heavy-duty truck brand. In 1923, GMC trucks helped rebuild Kantō, Japan, after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake decimated the entire city, destroying all of their only infrastructure: the railway. An Updated Turbocharger

For 2024, GMC has updated the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 in the Sierra HD Duramax to feature upgrades and improvements. It now makes 470 horsepower from just 2,800 rpm and 975 lb-ft of torque from only 1,600 rpm. Thanks to the updated engine performance, drivers have an extra 25% of low-end torque. 

A Smarter Transmission

The 2023 Sierra HD models equipped with a gas motor had a 6-speed automatic. GMC gave the 2024 models a 10-speed Allison transmission in the 6.6-liter gasoline engine, which has helped increase the overall towing capacity of the gas motor Sierra HD models. Because of the better gearing and transmission, the Sierra HD doesn’t have to hunt for the right gear, which gives drivers more confidence when merging onto the highway or even just driving around town. 

A Jump On The Competition

That isn’t where the good news ends, though, as the 2024 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty has been further tweaked to keep it ahead of the competition. The Duramax alone has been updated to add new cylinder heads with improved cooling jackets, a new engine controller, improvements to the reliability of the cylinder head and glow plugs, and a more efficient turbocharger that features a turbo vane actuator with uprated valve springs. Because of the significant upgrades, GMC improved the overall power and torque delivery all through the rev range and at all speeds, as well as better engine braking. 

Total Towing Capacity

These overall improvements to the new Sierra HD give the Crew Cab models a best-in-class max towing performance of 22,070 lbs, 22,430 lbs with a gooseneck/fifth-wheel, and a max payload of 4,178 lbs. For buyers that need even more, stepping up to the Sierra 3500 brings the total gooseneck/fifth-wheel trailering capability to 36,000 lbs with a max payload of 7,290 lbs.
