There is plenty to appreciate about the GMC Sierra 1500. It looks modern and tough, has a sophisticated interior, and offers a great many user conveniences. However, GMC never forgets that a pickup truck is essentially a tool, and a tool’s most important qualities are effectiveness and dependability.

The Sierra 1500’s specifications for power, payload, and towing capacity, among others, prove its effectiveness, but determining dependability requires time, and ideally, an outside source. Thus, Valley Buick GMC is proud to announce that the latest J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Quality Study and Durability Study has given its highest pickup truck durability rating to the GMC Sierra 1500.

J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from August through November 2022. From this, they found the 2020 GMC Sierra to be the most dependable full-size truck in its class.

Outcome Based on Four Weighted Categories

The survey responses cover several subjects, which are then formed into four categories and weighted for importance. This is how J.D. Power describes them:

Quality and Reliability (weight: 40%)
Sierra 1500 Rating: 86 (out of 100)

  • Measures the level of defects, malfunctions, and design flaws experienced by vehicle owners
  • Covers the entire vehicle, from the engine to the infotainment system
  • A higher rating means fewer problems

Driving Experience (20%)
Sierra 1500 Rating: 82

  • Owners’ evaluation of the vehicle’s design, performance, comfort, functionality, safety, and technology comprise this rating
  • Newer and recently redesigned vehicles tend to score better

Dealership Experience (20%)

Sierra 1500 Rating: 88

  • Owners’ experience with this brand’s dealerships during the purchase and service process makes up this rating
  • Key factors include customer service, dealership facilities, and the quality of work

Resale Value (20%)
Sierra 1500 Rating: 90

  • J.D. Power’s forecast of depreciation (how much of its current value the vehicle will likely lose) over the next three years
  • Lower depreciation equals a higher rating

The 2020 Sierra 1500 was rated quite well in all four categories by its owners and, perhaps consequently, had a very high resale value rating. It stands to reason that Quality & Reliability is given twice the weight of the other three, and in the case of the Sierra 1500, both its Quality & Reliability rating and overall rating come to 86, which is the highest score for all full-size trucks.

To reiterate, when it comes to full-size pickup trucks, quality and reliability are what really count. It’s what gives you the confidence that the truck you buy will get the job done now, all through the payment period, and for years after that. Now that you have proof that the GMC Sierra 1500 is at the top of the hill, there is no better place to find yours than Valley Buick GMC.
