How Do Car Seats Fit in the GMC Sierra 1500?

February 1st, 2025 by

Every year Cars.com has the tough task of testing each new vehicle and seeing how easy or difficult it is to put a car seat in the back—and not just one type of car seat, but all three types. One of the bigger variables between vehicles is how easy it is to use the Latch system that anchors the car seats. Some cars hide the anchors or make it difficult to reach them. However, the GMC Sierra 1500 passed Cars.com’s test with flying colors to be one of the best family vehicles on the market.

How Cars.com Evaluates Vehicles

When evaluating new vehicles like the 2025 Sierra for the Car Seat Check, Cars.com uses the Chicco KeyFit 30 infant-safety seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible seat, and the Graco TurboBooster seat, and then grades everyone from A to F. Another unique part of its testing is that the editors make sure to place the forward-facing convertible seat in the middle seat of the second row, while putting the booster and infant car seats in the outboard spots to check how difficult it is to have three kids in the back seat. To get a passing grade, the child in the booster seat must also be able to reach the seatbelt buckle with ease.

How Did the Sierra 1500 Do?

The automotive publication said that the Latch system was easy to reach and utilize, along with the top-mounted tether loops behind the headrests, and gave the Sierra 1500 an A. The Sierra also received an A for the infant seat, rear-facing convertible seat, and the booster. The GMC got a B for the forward-facing convertible seat simply because it was slightly confusing at first to understand how to get the seat’s tether strap to work with the car’s anchor point. However, upon reading the owner’s manual, it became very clear what to do, with the author saying, “This wasn’t complicated to do once we read about it in the owner’s manual …”

The Rear Seats Can Go Three Wide with Kids

The Sierra was also easily able to fit all three car seats in the back seat, allowing parents to feel that the full-size GMC truck could work with their lifestyle if they either have three children or plan on having that many kids.

The Final Verdict

In the end, Cars.com’s rated the GMC Sierra as a worthwhile vehicle for families and one that you should check out, saying that the Sierra 1500 “is a full-size pickup truck with loads of flexibility. For this Car Seat Check, we tested the uplevel Denali Ultimate crew cab with seating for five and liked its ample rear legroom and easy lower anchors.”
