Never underestimate the value of tires. They are your car’s only direct connection to the outside world. There is a significant amount of engineering built into all the models carried by Valley Buick GMC to give them the best possible combination of controlled handling, quiet & smooth ride, stability in poor conditions, etc. Yet it all can be defeated by the wrong set of tires, or enhanced by the correct set. Tires may generally look the same, but they can have widely different characteristics.

Tires Can Vary as Much as the Vehicles That Wear Them

Summer tires can significantly enhance traction on a dry road and make even a family vehicle feel like a sports car. Conversely, what works best on a dry road can have the opposite effect on a wet one, and we certainly have plenty of wet roads in the Auburn area. Some tires prioritize quietness, while others specialize in lower rolling resistance for the best possible fuel mileage. Of course, the all-terrain tires, such as you see on the GMC AT4 models, specialize in muddy, soft, and rocky surfaces. Every specialty has its tradeoff, and the speed of tire wear can change with any of these characteristics. Most crossovers and pickup trucks are originally fitted with all-season tires that prove to be reasonably adept in both dry and wet weather and offer a balance of ride, quietness, and tread life.

The Importance of Snow Tires

All-season tires are still no match for snow tires to keep your car moving and in its intended direction where the white stuff has accumulated. Auburn’s relatively moderate climate does not see too much snow, but any travel east in the winter months is a different story. And keep in mind that all-wheel or 4-wheel drive is not a replacement for good snow tires. Even all-terrain tires fall short of snow tires in snowy conditions.

All this is to say that your choice of tires should be made with thought to your own driving circumstances and personal preferences. If you do tend to regularly travel in-state in the winter or regularly go on ski trips, you should consider having a 2nd dedicated set of snow tires to change out as needed.
