By The Numbers: A Guide to the 2026 Sierra 1500’s Towing Capabilities

If you’re in the market for a full-size half-ton pickup like the GMC Sierra 1500, there’s a good chance you’re interested in towing a trailer. While automakers like to tout gargantuan tow figures in the hopes of bolstering interest, it’s important to note tow ratings will vary considerably based upon wheelbase and body style, engine, transmission and axle configurations, installed options, and other variables – all of which directly impact a truck’s potential pulling capability. In the case of the 2026 Sierra 1500, the chart in this Valley GMC post should help sort things out.  

Pulling a heavy trailer certainly takes plenty of power, especially in hilly terrain, but simply adding a larger, more powerful engine alone doesn’t necessarily equate to an elevated towing capacity. Tow ratings are also impacted by vehicle weight. Larger engines may pack more of a punch,  but are often physically larger and heavier than other powertrain options, and may not produce as big of a towing gain as you might expect. In the case of the Sierra 1500, you’ll occasionally see select models with the 6.2-liter V-8 may occasionally have a lower tow rating than a similar model equipped with the 5.3-liter V-8. 

Weight comes into play in other ways as well. Larger cabs, like Double Cabs or Crew Cabs, may have lower published maximum towing capacities than, for instance, a two-door regular cab model. Additionally, four-wheel drive systems can add weight and impact capability, along with other equipment like exterior accessories or a more uplevel interior.  Even tire and wheel changes can have an effect. The net effect is ironic: the bigger, brawnier, and fancier a truck is, the more its towing capacity may be impacted. 

Other equipment can impact tow ratings, including things like axle ratios and the available Max Tow package, must also be taken into account.  In the case of axle ratios, a numerically-larger ratio (i.e. 4.10:1 vs 3.43:1) usually helps increase towing ability, although it may sacrifice some off-the-line acceleration and fuel economy in the process.   All engines except the TurboMax four-cylinder are available with more than one axle ratio.  The larger ratio is usually part of the Maximum Trailering Package. 

It is important to know that additional factory options can also have a small impact on final towing capacity, so it is important to look at the specific figure for each individual model, which will be posted on the door jamb of the driver’s door.  On the GMC Sierra, the figures on this label, including gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross axle weight rating (GAWR), and maximum tow rating are specifically tailored to the individual vehicle.
