What Are the Tow Ratings of the 2025 Sierra HD?
The 2025 GMC Sierra HD lineup will arrive in showrooms soon. If you’re in the market for a heavy-duty truck, its towing capacity is probably near the top of your priority list. There’s good news for 2025 shoppers: if the 2024 GMC Sierra HD could tow the toy hauler you’ve had your eye on, the 2025 can too!

That’s the long way of saying that, by and large, the towing capacity figures for the 2025 model mirror last year’s. While there were some minor tweaks here and there, there don’t appear to be any cases where the difference is more than 200 pounds, and even those are few and far between.
Remember: Tow ratings are about more than just lots of torque and big brakes; a beefier frame and chassis will take the forces of heavier loads for longer and with less wear. That’s why the Sierra HD can do so much more than a comparable Sierra 1500; it’s just much more truck.

Want to skip the breakdown and go straight to the big numbers? Here’s a breakdown of the 2025 GMC Sierra HD’s maximum rated towing capacities for each chassis and engine configuration:
Sierra 2500HD Conventional Towing:
- 16,000 pounds (Gas), 20,000 pounds (Diesel)
Sierra 2500HD 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Towing:
- 18,700 pounds (Gas), 22,390 pounds (Diesel)
Sierra 3500HD Conventional Towing:
- 18,700 pounds (Gas), 20,000 pounds (Diesel)
Sierra 3500HD 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Towing:
- 19,080 pounds (Gas), 36,000 pounds (Diesel)
Tow More Than Ford or Ram – With up to 36,000 lbs max gooseneck towing, the 2025 GMC Sierra 3500HD outpulls both the Ford F-350 Super Duty and Ram 3500, giving you best-in-class capability for the biggest jobs.
If you’re hauling monster loads with a 5th wheel or gooseneck setup and you need the most truck you can get your hands on, the Sierra 3500HD is the obvious choice here. With configurations that allow you to tow up to a stunning 36,000 pounds with the 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel V8, you’re in a position to put just about anything behind your new pickup. If you’d prefer gasoline, you’re limited to 19,080 pounds with a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer.

There’s also the option of towing a conventional trailer behind your 3500HD. This limits you to 20,000 pounds of towing capacity with the Duramax or 18,700 pounds with the gas engine — a relatively small penalty.

If you’d prefer the Sierra 2500HD, your options are still robust. Your max tow configuration (gooseneck/5th wheel) with the diesel Duramax will let you pull 22,390 pounds, or 18,700 pounds with the gasoline V8. If you’re going conventional, the Duramax can still tow a whopping 20,000 pounds, while the gasoline V8 tops out at 16,000.
Keep in mind, these figures are based on certain configurations and don’t apply to every truck. If you have questions about any 2025 GMC Sierra HD, come see us at Valley GMC today!
