GMC Canyon AT4X Review

Midsize pickup trucks have grown in size and capability to the point that they are more vehicle than many people need. That makes them excellent alternatives to larger, more expensive full-size trucks. The GMC Canyon is a comfortable, tech-forward pickup that has been recently updated. The Canyon AT4X AEV Edition tops the lineup, bringing beefy off-road upgrades and a powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
2024 GMC Canyon Performance
Though GMC made significant changes to its engine lineup with the most recent Canyon overhaul, cutting the diesel and V6 engine options in favor of a more powerful four-cylinder across the line. It’s a turbocharged 2.7-liter mill making 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. In the AT4X, power hits all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but rear-wheel-drive is available in lower trims. Though it’s “only” a four-cylinder, the engine provides more than enough power and torque to ease the truck into and out of trouble. The smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic is responsive and keeps the engine working hard.
GMC equips a range of off-road upgrades with both the AT4 and AT4X, but the X model gets the best goodies. It comes with Multimatic DSSV dampers and offers front and rear electronic-locking differentials. GMC fits a transfer case shield and rocker protectors underneath to keep vital powertrain components safe on the trails. There’s also a Baja drive mode exclusive to the AT4X model.
2024 GMC Canyon Interior
GMC offers one cab configuration for the Canyon, which is a five-seat crew cab setup. While cloth comes standard for lower trims, the AT4X steps up to genuine leather, and the test truck came with optional heated and ventilated front seats. The interior is comfortable and spacious up front, with well-padded and supportive bucket seats. GMC designed the Canyon’s cabin with excellent ergonomics that put all controls and displays within easy reach of the driver and front passenger.
The back seat isn’t as spacious, but the rear bench provides better shape and support than the Canyon’s competitors. Off-road suspension gives the AT4X plenty of ground clearance and an imposing ride height, but those upgrades can make it difficult for children and people with mobility issues to get in and out.
2024 GMC Canyon Tech
The Canyon comes standard with an 11.3-inch touchscreen and an 11-inch digital gauge cluster. Running on Google Built-In, the system includes Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more. The AT4X trim adds wireless smartphone mirroring, wireless charging, and a Bose audio system. GMC’s infotainment interface is responsive and feature-rich, and it’s an easy-to-use system that makes interacting with the truck less distracting while driving.
2024 GMC Canyon Safety
The 2024 Canyon comes standard with lane keep assist, lane departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warnings with pedestrian detection. Available tech includes blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet rated the truck, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it four out of five stars.
