Commuting In a Hummer EV Pickup

Autoblog did something novel with the 2026 Hummer EV Pickup. The author, Kristen Brown, drove it like a normal vehicle, combining a daily commute with normal family duties. There was no extreme off-roading on this test, just the normal slog in traffic and around town, just as most Hummer EV Trucks are likely to spend their time. This Valley GMC tells you how that went.

The original Hummer H1 was a mildly civilianized version of the HMMWV military transport vehicle produced by AMGeneral. In its original form, it was designed to go over any terrain. But it was also to be driven and ridden by soldiers who were literally paid to be in it, and none of whom had to foot the fuel costs that could drop to eight mpg.

It was clearly built for military missions, with comfort being far from the mission brief. For instance, the large (usually diesel) engine was positioned in the middle of the cabin where it could be shielded by enemy fire, by soldier bodies if necessary; a grim but practical consideration. For H1 owners unlikely to encounter a military attack, it just meant a loud, surprisingly cramped cabin for such a large vehicle. The attacks they were more likely to encounter were from fellow citizens who saw the H1 and the GM-derived H2 and H3 models as a big rolling middle finger to environmentalism, energy efficiency, and self-sufficiency. The brand was discontinued along with other GM brands in 2010.

The new Hummer models, now under the GMC brand, retain the same large footprint and all-American swagger, but as EVs, they are environmentally benign. There are certainly more efficient EVs out there, but no modern Hummer produces even a milligram of carbon during operation.

At the same time, it boasts staggering numbers. The 3X model tested by Autoblog has 1,160 horsepower and approximately 1,200 lb-ft of motor torque. Its 24-module battery pack holds 246 kilowatt-hours (212-kWh usable) for up to 381 miles of range, and a 0-60 time of about 3 seconds from a vehicle that weighs over 9,000 pounds. Everything is “a lot” in the new Hummer EV Pickup.

And yet, the author found the vehicle to be quite an enjoyable daily driver. It may be massive, but the Hummer likes stop-and-go traffic like any other EV. And its driver ends up liking it as well because every brake in traffic is no longer harshing your vibe but putting juice back in the battery. Brown noticed that after ten miles of heavy traffic, the vehicle had only used four miles of range. When traffic opens up, the vehicle’s massive power makes quick lane changes a breeze. Again, all this without a smidgen of vehicle emissions.

With no military priorities and the three motors located far from the cabin, the interior is spacious and comfortable. Rear passengers also enjoy comfortable seats, windows that roll all the way down, their own charge ports, and both vents and controls for the climate system.

With the adaptive suspension, the ride is smooth when you want it to be and can tighten up to make twisty roads more fun, further helped by the low center of gravity created by the vehicle’s big battery. In the city, its size is mitigated by the 4-wheel steering, which makes it shockingly nimble in tight parking lots.

As with all GM EVs, there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interface because GM wants to keep the information from the infotainment system for itself. However, the native Google-based operating system is easy to use. It includes on-board Google Maps, the Google Assistant voice recognition system, and access to several apps in the Google Play Store.

The best way to have this or any EV is to be able to charge at home, but when you venture far enough to need on-the-road charging, the Hummer EV models can accept a 350 kW DC charge, adding 100 miles in just 10-14 minutes and reaching a full charge in about 75 minutes. You will likely enjoy SuperCruise on those long drives as well. For all its swagger and off-road ability, the Hummer is surprisingly enjoyable and can do pretty much whatever you ask of it.

There are undoubtedly more practical EVs for the daily commute, but the Hummer EV Pickup is a genial partner for everyday use between your occasional rock-hopping adventures. If you live anywhere in the greater Seattle area, visit Valley GMC to experience the Hummer EV Pickup or SUV for yourself.
