2025 Acadia Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Award

September 20th, 2025 by

Safety is important for any vehicle, from sports cars to pickup trucks. It likely has a higher priority among shoppers when their families are in the car. Therefore, with a three-row crossover, where families are the main focus, safety is a top concern for buyers. Valley GMC is proud to announce that the 2025 Acadia has earned a TOP SAFETY PICK designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The award is for vehicles built after January 2025, which applies to most vehicles in inventory at this time.

GMC Acadia IIHS Safety Pick

To earn the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK designation, vehicles must achieve an “Acceptable” rating in the Moderate Overlap Front Crash Test, where 40% of the front of the vehicle hits a rigid barrier at 40 mph. The test measures intrusion into the cabin at key locations and assess the impact on crash test dummies using sensor readings in the head, neck, chest, legs, and feet.

The vehicle must also earn a “Good” rating (the highest) in the Small Overlap Front Impact Test. In this test, the vehicle hits a rigid barrier at 40 mph that covers only 25% of the front, simulating hitting a pole or part of an opposing vehicle. This test is more challenging because only a small portion of the vehicle’s front structure plays a role in protecting the occupants. The evaluations are like those of the moderate test.

IIHS also requires a “Good” rating in the Side Impact Test, which uses a 4,200-pound striking rig with a deformable barrier—like a vehicle’s front end—to hit the driver side of the test vehicle at 37 mph. Once again, intrusion into the cabin is measured, along with the condition of the crash test dummies in both the front and rear seats (the dummies in the second-row seat simulate 12-year-old children), based on sensors in the head, neck, torso, and pelvis.

Beyond impact tests, vehicles must also earn “Acceptable” or “Good” ratings in pedestrian front crash prevention, which tests the automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection system. This tests the Acadia’s Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking system that is just a part of the standard safety and driver assistance technologies, which also include:

  • Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Reverse Automatic Braking
  • Rear Cross Traffic Braking
  • Blind Zone Steering Assist
  • Side Bicyclist Alert
  • HD Surround Vision
  • Following Distance Indicator
