2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup
The original Hummer models were large, imposing SUVs that were extremely capable and had an attitude like nothing else on the road. Unfortunately, they were also heavily criticized for being the epitome of gas-thirsty carbon producers. During GM’s brand restructuring of 2009, Hummer was the first to go. But Hummer has returned, and its vehicles have just as much presence, greater capability, and even more attitude, but don’t use a drop of gas or emit a molecule of carbon. All Hummers will be fully-electric and are now under the GMC brand, so now everything they produce will be carried here at Valley Buick GMC.
While the first round of Hummers were mostly SUVs with a truck variant, the debut model of the new Hummer is a 4-door pickup called simply the Hummer EV Pickup. The very first trim for the truck is the EV Edition 1, all of which already have been pre-ordered, so we will focus on the next available in the lineup, the Hummer EV3X. This all-new, all-electric Hummer is more powerful than the original could have ever dreamed to be. With the same drivetrain as the Edition 1, the main difference is several items that were standard on Edition 1 will be optionally available on the EV3X.
EV3X Capability
The EV3X name refers to the 3 electric motors powering this Hummer. There is one in front and two in the rear for standard All-wheel drive, and together they produce 1,000 horsepower and up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. And because these are electric motors, all that torque is available from the moment the wheels turn. As a result, with the available Watts to Freedom feature, the EV3x can sprint from a dead-stop to 60 mph in an exotic-sportscar-beating 3.3 seconds, reach 100 mph in 8.8 seconds and trip the quarter-mile wire in 11.9 seconds. Not bad for a vehicle with 128 cubic feet of cabin space.
Towing is rated at 7,500 pounds, and the maximum payload is 1,300 pounds. Empty, the Hummer has a manufacturer-estimated combined driving range of 329 miles. Car and Driver’s estimated range at a steady 75 mph is 290 miles. A double-stacked, liquid-cooled lithium-ion 212.7 kWh battery pack stores the energy. An 800-volt electric architecture allows 350-kilowatt fast charging from a compatible DC-direct charger which will add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
The Hummer EV pickup has a fully-lined 5-foot long bed and is available with the GMC multi-pro tailgate, which extends usable bed floor length to 6 feet and 10 inches. It also has 11 cubic feet of storage up front where the engine isn’t, which is fully secure under a power hood.
EV3X Safety and Driver Assistance
Most notable among the driver assistance features is a free 3-year trial of Super Cruise, which allows true hands-free driving on up to 400K miles of compatible roads in the US and Canada. Super Cruise even includes an automatic lane change feature. For roads not covered by Super Cruise, there is standard adaptive cruise control, as well as automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and both lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
