2023-2024 Hummer EV SUV

Front 7/8 view of the 2023 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup in the desert.

Of the original Hummer SUVS, only the H1 was derived from a military vehicle, but the H2 and even the smaller H3 were still designed to be big, blocky, imposing vehicles with overt off-road credentials and a cavalier attitude toward fuel consumption. The new Hummer EV SUV keeps the look and the attitude but runs entirely on stored electrons. It will be the largest all-electric SUV on the market, and because Hummers are now under the GMC brand umbrella, they will be sold here at Valley Buick GMC

The Hummer EV SUV looks and largely is a long-roof version of the EV truck, but there are some distinct differences. Most prominently, the SUV has a 9-inch shorter wheelbase than the truck, increasing both its maneuverability and off-road ability. Like the truck, the EV SUV is a five-seater with a large cargo area.

EV SUV Capability

Rear 3/4 view of the 2023 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup. The 2023 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup features next-generation EV propulsion technology to enable the ultimate off-road capability and on-road performance.

Depending on the trim level, the EV SUV is propelled by dual electric motors producing a total of 625 horsepower and a claimed 7,400lb-ft of torque. The EV3X SUV has 3 motors with one in front and two in the rear producing a total of 830 horsepower and up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. With the available Watts to Freedom system, this gets the EV3X SUV to 60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds. Towing is rated at 7,500 pounds, and the maximum payload is 1,300 pounds.

On a full charge, the EPA-estimated range is 250 miles for the EV, and 300+ miles for the EV2X and EV3X. For the latter two trim levels, an 800-volt electric architecture allows 350-kilowatt fast charging from a compatible DC-direct charger which will add 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes.

With its shorter wheelbase, the EV SUV has off-road advantages over the truck. While both share the same amazing 49.6-degree approach angle, the SUV‘s departure angle nearly matches the front at 49.0 degrees. The 34.4-degree breakover angle betters the Pickup by 2.2 degrees.

The shorter SUV also improves maneuverability. With the 4-Wheel Steer system on the 2X and 3X trims, it has a 35.4-foot turning radius, which is tighter than the Mustang Mach-E’s. The e4WD system on the 3X can channel power to a single wheel, which, combined with 13 inches of suspension travel, keeps the vehicle moving in very tough terrain. It is able to climb 60 percent grades (forward and reverse), scale 18-inch verticals, and traverse more than 2 feet of water.

The 4-wheel Steer system also allows the rear wheels to turn in the same direction as the front allowing it to “CrabWalk” diagonally around obstacles. An available Extreme Off-Road Package adds:

  • Unique 18-inch wheels and 35-inch-OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires
  • Underbody armor and rock sliders
  • UltraVision with protected front- and rear-facing underbody cameras with a wash system. Front eLocker and rear virtual lockers
  • Heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts

Every Hummer EV SUV includes a large 13.4-inch diagonal screen that, in addition to the expected infotainment duties, has an in-vehicle Energy App that displays energy use, can set up charging schedules, monitors battery temperature conditioning, and more. It can also display information related to the HUMMER EV’s selectable capabilities and provide performance readouts in off-road driving scenarios, including ride height, eLocker engagement, compass headings, pitch/roll status, and more. There is also a trail mapping function that helps you plan and navigate off-road driving adventures, including charging locations and their distances from off-road locations as well as providing real-time energy consumption information. Like the truck, the 3X is available with four removable “Sky Panels” that can be stored in the frunk. The tailgate swings to the side to reveal a 48-inch-wide cargo opening.
