The 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 vs the Competition

2025 Sierra 1500 vs the Competition

GMC trucks date back to 1902, starting with the first model from the Reliance Motor Car Company. Six years later, they were purchased by General Motors, which combined them with Rapid Motor Vehicle Co. to become General Motors Truck, which was quickly shortened to GMC Trucks. Since then, GMC has been the corporation’s premium truck manufacturer. Sierra, which refers to a range of jagged mountains in Spanish, was first applied to GMC’s full-size truck line in 1968.

Today’s Sierra is available in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations. Bed sizes include 5’8” and 6’6” and an eight-foot bed for the Regular Cab models. There are four engines available:

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4
    • 310 @ 5600 horsepower
    • 430 lb-ft @ 1500 torque
  • 5.3-liter V8
    • 355 @ 5600 horsepower
    • 383 lb-ft @ 4100 torque
  • 6.2-liter V8
    • 420 @ 5600 horsepower
    • 460 lb-ft @ 4100 torque
  • 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-6
    • 305 @ 3750 horsepower
    • 495 lb-ft @ 1500

The 2.7-liter engine is paired to an 8-speed transmission, while a 10-speed automatic transmission is used for the other three engines.

While the Sierra shares its mechanical components with the Chevrolet Silverado, the Sierra, and the GMC brand overall, emerges as a premium product with more refined interior details. It was the first to include new tech and reaches a higher level of sophisticated content with its Denali luxury sub-brand. How does the Sierra compete outside the GM family? Read on to find out.

Ford has long been the biggest rival for both GM-branded trucks. While the F-150 has the distinction of being the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., the Sierra and Silverado often closely match or exceed the Ford’s sales. Nonetheless, sales of over 750K models per year enable the F-150 to have a broad model line with Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew® cabs, six different internal combustion engine choices, including the hybrid drivetrain but not including the all-electric Lightning model. It also has eight trim levels, from the basic XL to the Tundra TRD Pro, competing with the Raptor®, to the luxurious Platinum, which would compete against the Sierra Denali. Neither the Sierra EV nor the F-150 Lightning are part of this comparison.

  • The base engines of both trucks have 2.7 liters of displacement and are turbocharged. They trade power advantages, with the F-150 having more horsepower (325 vs. 310) and the Sierra having more lb-ft of torque (430 vs. 400).
  • The F-150’s best mileage comes from its hybrid drivetrain (4×4 only) with 22/24/23. The Sierra turbo-diesel beats that with 22/26/24 on its 4×4 model and is available as a 4×2 with 23/29/26.
  • When comparing base engines, the GMC Sierra has a higher maximum payload (2000 lb. vs. 1,685).
  • Also, when comparing base engines, the GMC Sierra has a higher base towing capacity (9,200 lb. vs. 7,600).
  • The most popular configuration for both models is the large 4-door cab with a small cargo box. However, the Sierra’s box is slightly smaller than the F-150’s (69.9 inches vs. 67.1).
  • The versatile Multi-Pro Tailgate, featuring several useful configurations, is not available on the F-150.
  • Climate control vents for the rear passengers are standard across the Sierra model line but require an upgrade on the F-150.
  • The convenience of keyless start is standard across the Sierra model line but requires an upgrade on the F-150.
  • On the upper side of the model lines, the Sierra offers a 13.4-inch center touchscreen, compared to the 12-inch for the F-150.
  • The Sierra’s Google Built-in infotainment operating system includes an onboard Google Maps app which works without a phone connection. This is not available on the F-150.

2025 Sierra 1500 vs RAM 1500Like GMC, there have been Dodge pickup trucks for over a century. The Ram name first appeared in 1989, and when the truck division separated from Dodge in 2010, Ram became the brand name, with “1500” being the official designation for the half-ton pickup truck. In the past year, the Ram has shed its roster of Hemi V8s, transitioning to a “Hurricane” 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine, with a 3.6 normally-aspirated V6 as the base engine. Models are available with a Quad Cab featuring short rear doors and a Crew Cab with four standard-sized doors. Cargo beds are offered in lengths of 5’7” and 6’4”. There are eight trim levels, starting with the basic Tradesman and culminating with the Tungsten, the flagship of the model line.

  • When comparing base engines, the Sierra has slightly more horsepower than the Ram 1500 (310 vs. 305) and significantly more lb-ft of torque (430 vs. 271).
  • When comparing base trucks, the Sierra has a greater Gross Combined Weight rating of 14,500 lb. compared to 11,900 for the Ram 1500.
  • With no diesel or hybrid model, the best fuel economy of the Ram 1500 model line is 20/26/23 compared to 23/29/26 with the Sierra 4×2 with the turbo-diesel engine.
  • Maximum towing capacity with the Sierra is 13,200 pounds compared to 11,550 pounds for the Ram 1500.
  • The Sierra offers the convenience of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its model line, while the Ram 1500’s smartphone compatibility is wired for most of its line.
  • The Ram does not have the 15 available camera views or Transparent Trailer view towing features available on the Sierra.
  • At about the midpoint between the two model lines (Sierra SLT vs. Ram Big Horn), the Sierra has a standard 13.4-inch touchscreen, while the Ram still has an 8.4-inch screen, with a 12-inch screen available as an option.
  • The Ram has no hands-free drive system like the available SuperCruise system for the Sierra.
  • The Ram’s available Barn door tailgate is nowhere near as versatile as the Sierra’s available Multi-Pro Tailgate.
  • When comparing the Sierra AT4X to the Ram 1500 RHO, the Sierra’s innovative, racing-derived Multimatic dampers offer far greater sophistication than the Bilstein dampers on the Ram, delivering both extreme off-road capability and a comfortable highway ride.
  • The Sierra AT4X has both front and rear locking differentials compared to just a rear locking differential on the RHO.

2025 Sierra 1500 vs Toyota TundraThe Tundra is Toyota’s full-size pickup truck, named after a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America, where the subsoil is permanently frozen. Its engine choices are all based on its twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine in multiple states of tune, including a hybrid version. All engines are paired to a 10-speed transmission. The Tundra skips a two-door regular cab to offer a shortened 4-door cab in addition to its CrewMax full 4-door cab. It offers a choice of 5.5, 6.5, and 8.1 foot beds, the latter tied strictly to the smaller cab.

  • When comparing base models, the Tundra has more horsepower (310 vs. 348) but less torque (430 lb-ft vs. 405) than the Sierra.
  • Also, when comparing base models, the Sierra has greater towing capacity than the Tundra (9,400 lb. vs. 8,300).
  • When fuel efficiency is paramount, even the Tundra hybrid model can’t approach the Sierra’s fuel mileage with the turbodiesel, which is 22/26/24 compared to 20/24/22 for the Tundra Hybrid (4×2 models).
  • The Sierra can tow a maximum of 13,300 pounds vs. the 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity of the Tundra.
  • The Sierra has a standard seating capacity of six compared to five for the Tundra.
  • The Tundra has nothing approaching the versatility of the available Multi-Pro tailgate on the Sierra.
  • Rear passengers in the Sierra have more inches of room in nearly all dimensions, including:
    • Legroom (44.5 vs. 41.6)
    • Shoulder room (65.2 vs 62.4)
    • Hip room (60.2 vs. 60.5)
    • Headroom (40.1 vs. 38.5)
  • The Sierra’s short bed is slightly longer than the Tundra’s (69.9 inches vs. 65.6).
  • The Sierra offers the SuperCruise hands-free highway driving technology for long drives, while the Tundra does not have compatible technology.
  • The Tundra mimics its rugged exterior styling in its dashboard, while the Sierra offers a more elegant and refined dash design.
